Webinar Series 2 - 2026

The Ethiopian Geophysical Union International (ETGUI) will hold its second webinar of 2026 on March 28. The webinar will be held from 8:00-9:00 AM PST (11:00 AM -12:00 PM EST and 6:00-7:00 PM Ethiopian Time).

The speaker for the upcoming webinar is Mekdelawit Deribe, a water science researcher working on the Nile Basin. She has a background in Civil and Hydraulic Engineering as well as Environmental Sciences, and is currently finalizing her PhD studies at Florida International University. Her research examines pathways toward sustainable and equitable utilization of the Nile Basin’s water resources. Since 2018, Mekdelawit has been actively engaged in the Nile water discourse through both academic research and broader public and policy dialogues.

In her presentation, titled “Transboundary Water Allocation in the Nile Basin: Past Attempts, Persistent Challenges, and Future Pathways”, she will review major past attempts at water allocation in the Nile Basin, examining the motivations behind these efforts, the legal rationale informing them, the main stipulations of proposed arrangements, and the key limitations. The discussion concludes by reflecting on potential pathways forward, in light of recent developments in the basin, and considers how these insights may support basin-wide dialogue toward equitable and sustainable utilization of the Nile’s shared waters.
