The Ethiopian Geophysical Union International (ETGUI) will hold its third webinar of 2026 on May 2. The webinar will be held from 8:00-9:00 AM PST (11:00 AM -12:00 PM EST and 6:00-7:00 PM Ethiopian Time).
The upcoming webinar titled “Emerging Landslide Hazards in Ethiopia: Bridging Research, Policy and Practice” will be delivered by two prominent professionals in the field, Dr. Tarekegn Tadesse and Dr. Leulalem Shano. Dr. Tarekegn Tadesse is an Associate Professor in Geology at the Department of Geology, Addis Ababa Science and Technology University. He has made substantial contributions to Ethiopian earth sciences, including the new edition of country-wide geological and hydrogeological maps of Ethiopia. He also serves as an advisory member to the Ministry of Mines, the Ministry of Water; Water and Mines Bureaus of the Regional States. Dr. Leulalem Shano has over 15 years of teaching and research experience at Arba Minch University. His research interests primarily focus on landslide susceptibility assessment, hazard and risk analysis, groundwater investigation, and mineral exploration.
The speakers will synthesize key research findings on landslide causes and risk patterns in Ethiopia; explore bottlenecks preventing the uptake of scientific knowledge into practice, and deliberate on actionable pathways for integrating research into policy, planning, and implementation.
