1 PhD position in Storm Precipitation Analysis.02/26/08

The Chair of Hydrology and Water Resources Management, Institute of Environmental Engineering, ETH Zurich has a vacancy for 1 PhD position in Storm Precipitation Analysis in the context of natural hazards. The research will focus on understanding the basin-scale connections between the space-time structure of storm rainfall fields and the occurrence of widespread natural hazards such as landslides, floods, etc., in the Swiss Alps. The focus will be on (a) the analysis of the storm precipitation space-time structure, (b) the identification of important storm properties for the occurrence of natural hazards, and (c) the implementation of stochastic models for the simulation of extreme rainfall. The PhD student will be integrated into a developing group on precipitation analysis, which consists of other students working on rainfall analysis and modelling as well as at the development of the calibration and testing of a new X-band radar installed in the high Alps.

The PhD student will also collaborate with researchers within the broad scope of the ETH project APUNCH (Advanced Process UNderstanding and prediction of hydrological extremes and Complex Hazards). Prerequisites for application are high motivation for scientific research, a strong background in hydrology/meteorology and mathematical statistics, experience with programming and handling large datasets, and excellent spoken and written command of English.

Standard ETH Zurich PhD conditions are provided. Zurich is an attractive city with excellent access to the Alps and good connections Europe-wide. Applications should include a detailed CV and a motivation letter, and should be sent as single PDF file to hydrologie@ifu.baug.ethz.ch. The application deadline is 1st April 2008. The position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.
