Background
There is no doubt that there are many Ethiopian intellectuals, especially
in the field of Geophysics, around the world. Most of these individuals work in
academia, various industries, and government institutions and have rich and diverse
experiences. It is, therefore, imperative to bring these intellectuals together
so they can share their experiences and be able to support each other and those
in similar professions in our home country. It was in December 2004 at the annual
Fall American Geophysical Union (AGU) meeting that about ten Ethiopian professional
had a dinner gathering and brain stormed different ways to do something for our
country. At this historical dinner gathering we reviewed the numerous challenges
and opportunities that we faced. We also understood that every challenge gives rise
to new opportunity. Finally we agreed that it is important that we come together
and work towards building a viable and lasting professional organization to meet
these challenges and take advantage of the opportunities. Such a professional organization
would not only benefit its members but also can make a difference in the lives of
our people here in the Diaspora and in our home country. It is in light of this
that Ethiopian Geophysicist and others in related fields residing around the world,
have formed a professional and non-profitable union on December 14, 2004 in San
Francisco, California. The union, hereby called the Ethiopian Geophysical Union
International (EGUI). As a professional organization, it is strictly non-political,
non-religious, and non-profitable, and will promote only those ideals related to
the geophysical profession and geophysical education as clearly guided by its objective
and mission in its bylaw. Although EGUI is an independent scientific union, it will
form strong link and working relationships with similar Ethiopian professional union
and/or societies, such as Ethiopian Physical Science Association (EPSA), American
Geophysical Union (AGU), and European Geosciences Union (EGU). EGUI has five members
of executive officers elected by the founding members. The executive officers consist
of president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and Auditor.
The current executive officers are:
1. Dr. Alemayehu Lakew; President
2. Dr. Endawoke Yizengaw; Vice President
3. Dr. Mekonnen Gebremichael; Secretary
4. Dr. Gabriel Senay; Treasurer
5. Mr. Sitotaw Yirdaw; Auditor
